Ferenc Kiss (1954), singer of the city, musician, composer, folk music collector and lyric writer. He played in the band Vízöntő for 20 years, and is one of the founders of the legendary Kolinda band. As a composer he represents a unique and distinctive trend, which is basically about building the elements of Hungarian folklore into a new composition system. He maintains a tight relationship with other artistic genres and has composed music of numerous films, theatre plays and contemporary dance theatre productions. As a musician he co-operates with music formations that, on one hand, play original Hungarian music at a very high artistic level and, on the other hand, look for new and challenging ways to re-interpret traditional folk music. In 1992 he founded Etnofon Records which is involved in the studio recording, archiving and distributing of folk music-based contemporary and alternative music. Since 1994 he has presented his more recent works with the Etnofon Music Company (Etnofon Zenei Társulás). During its concerts the scene is almost equivalent with the music. The carefully composed scenery, lighting and folk dance-based dance theatre choreography together deliver the composer's message. In 1998 he teamed up with prominent musicians to Odessa Klezmer Band, which plays Eastern-European village Jewish music at a very high artistic standard. He has been collecting folk music since 1972, mainly among Hungarians living in Kárpátalja. In addition to that he is the editor of publications, author of music reviews and studies, an active figure in contemporary music life and the supporter of fledgling but talented musicians.
